Rising tensions around Al-Aqsa Mosque
The Al-Aqsa Mosque packed with worshippers, was raided early on Wednesday by the Israeli Police. In the aftermath of the conflict, fear and tensions are on the rise. Further, as Islamic and Jewish holidays keep aligning, there exists fright regarding other such expected confrontations which may take place in the near future.
A video surfaced on various social media platforms, which clearly showed the Israeli Police personnel beating up Palestinians with rifle butts and batons. The clash took place at the Al-Aqsa mosque which is a subject of reverence and worship for both Muslims and the Jewish. The revered site was tainted with violence on Wednesday, further deepening tensions between two countries that are already not on friendly terms.
Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, reported that a large number of worshippers, possibly dozens who spend all night praying due to Ramadan, were injured as a result of the police raiding the place of worship.
‘This exceeds all red lines’: Palestine
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the spokesperson of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, stated in a media statement on Wednesday that this was a condemnable act on part of Israel and that it ‘exceeds all red lines and will lead to a large explosion’.

‘Not clear what sparked the violence
It has not been clarified what was the cause of the violence being fueled. Israeli Police while responding to the media have stated that the operation was conducted to evacuate worshippers who were ‘holed up with fireworks, sticks and stones’. It was also stated that dozens of ‘rioters’ were detained and that one police officer had injured his leg, in the clash, reportedly, by a stone.
Israel Police has completely placed the blame upon the worshippers for inciting violence.
A wave of Palestinian protest and violence
The raids were followed by a series of protests, condemnations, and violence by the Palestinian side. The Official Military Statements of the Israeli nation have revealed that sirens were sounded to warn Israelis of incoming Palestinian rockets in certain areas of Israel. The warnings were especially given in the areas surrounding the Gaza Strip.
In Gaza, Hamas called its people to protest on a large scale, following which gatherings were seen on the streets, with calls for more violent demonstrations at the Gaza-Israel frontier.
The Israel Military also reported that two barrages of rockets were fired by Gaza militants, toward Southern Israel. No casualties or damage was reported, however, the military said that five rockets were intercepted and four landed in open areas.

The issue of the coinciding holidays
Tensions have been on the rise in recent days in the region as the religious holidays of the two communities- Islamic and Jewish, have been coinciding with each other. In East Jerusalem and the West Bank have been heated for months as an air of fear surrounded the convergence of the Muslim holy month of Fasting- Ramadan, and the Passover.
Clashes at the Temple Mount- the third holiest shrine in Islam which is also the most sacred place of worship in Judaism have fueled many deadly wars between the Hamas rulers of Gaza and Israel, in the past. The most recent such war was initiated two years ago, in 2021. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_conflict_in_2021)
