Ranveer Singh’s “Jayeshbhai Jordaar” is scheduled for release in theatres on May 13. The movie is a comedy-drama about a timid man’s effort to defeat patriarchal rules and protect his pregnant wife.
After the release of the trailer for Ranveer Singh’s “Jayeshbhai Jordaar,” an NGO called “Youth Against Crime” filed a plea. This plea challenges the Yashraj film trailer over the portrayal of the prenatal sex-determination scene in it.
The film is based on the subject of female foeticide and endeavours to support the initiative of “Save Girl Child” in India.
Public Interest Litigation
The PIL was filed against the clinic scene in Ranveer Singh’s “Jayeshbhai Jordaar”, where usage of ultrasound technology is shown.
The scene is shown in the trailer without any censoring and, as per the plea, openly advertises sex-selection. Under section 3, 3A, 3B, 4, 6 & 22 of PC & PNDT Act it is not allowed.
PC & PNDT Act
Advocate Pawan Prakash Pathak, who filed the plea, expressed that the makers’ use of ultrasound technique is a restricted practice. He said this portrayal may advertise usage of ultrasound techniques, which is prohibited under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagonostic Techniques Act, 1994.
The PC & PNDT Act of 1994 provides a prohibition on prenatal diagnostic techniques for determining genetic abnormalities. It also prohibits sex-selection, be it before conception or after.
Section 3A is for prohibiting sex-selection. Section 3B says that machines used in ultrasound can’t be sold to anyone who isn’t registered with the Act.
Section 22 prohibits advertising of pre-natal sex-determination and specifically punishes those for contravening.
Conclusion
Ranveer Singh’s “Jayeshbhai Jordaar” may end up getting the clinic scene deleted by the Central Board of Film Certification. Or the CBFC, as the respondents in this case, will be made to censor the scene.
