Establishment of Jio Institute
The government of India introduced the Institute of Eminence (IoE) program in the year 2017. The goal was to allow the higher education institutions of India to make it in the world rankings for Education Institutions and Universities. Afterwards, the Jio Institute conceived and received IoE recognition in 2018. Then it was under the “greenfield category” — given to institutions that have not yet been founded.
However, some criticized its inclusion in the list with Institutions that were already existing. The Ministry later clarified that such colleges will be issued a letter of intent (LoI). This step was to give them time to develop before entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government. After which it was decided that by July 2021, it would turn in a readiness report.
The Institutions under the Institute of Eminence brand are granted higher autonomy. And as part of the IoE program, the Education Ministry also funds public institutions separately. Until now, twenty institutions are designated as IoE.
