Sanju Samson was out of the series in India Vs. Sri Lanka T20I. He was out from the series due to a knee injury. Jitesh Sharma is the replacement of Sanju Samson in India Cricket T20I’s squad against Sri Lanka.
After Sanju Samson was dropped from the team due to a knee injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Jitesh Sharma as a substitute for Sanju Samson in India’s T20I squad. It was a bit surprised by BCCI as Jitesh was never expected to be the part of Indian Cricket XI team, but due to the unavailability of Rishabh Pant’s accident and KL Rahul, the former wicketkeeper-batsman in Punjab Kings will join the Indian Cricket dressing room.
How Jitesh Sharma became the part of the team
In a cricket match at Wankhede stadium, we observe that Samson was able to survive a mini scare but after the moments, he was packed for 5 by Dhananjaya de Silva. On the cricket ground, Sanju started the Sir Lankan innings by making a fielding mistake because he missed a simple catch, and later that he hurt his knee when he was fielding near the boundary ropes.
The BCCI confirmed that he was injured and announced Jitesh Sharma as his replacement in the team. It was a surprising decision by BCCI selectors as Jitesh was never expected to be in the team but due to the unavailability of Rishabh Pant’s accident and KL Rahul, the former wicketkeeper-batsman of Punjab Kings will join the Indian Cricket team in the dressing room and in the match.
Reason for dropping Sanju Samson
From the last year 2022, he was always sidelined from the main team, Sanju Samson fans hoped that the year 2024 would prove to be better for him, however, it was the opposite of hopes. The Kerala batsman, who was part of the Indian Cricket playing XI team against Sri Lanka in the first T20I tournament in Mumbai, failed to be part of the team and also got a knee injury while fielding for the team.
Jitesh Sharma before his selection in the team
Jitesh Sharma started his career as an IPL player. He was a player of the Punjab Kings but he was also a part of the Mumbai Indians team in the year 2017. He didn’t play. He made his cricket debut in Indian Premier League (IPL) in the previous year against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), in which he scored 26 runs in 17-ball.
The wicketkeeper-batsman has made 12 appearances for Punjab Kings (PBKS), in which he hit a total of 234 runs from 10 innings, hitting 44 runs in a 34-ball against Delhi Capitals being his highest score ever. He also played for the Vidarbha team at the domestic level and has been one of the most consistent performers on their team.
He was then selected by the IPL heavyweights Mumbai Indians team for 10 lakh rupees in the IPL of 2016 auction. He also made his Ranji Trophy debut in the same season but there failed to perform well and not had an impressive impact. After that, Jitesh was acquired by the Punjab Kings IPL team in the year 2022 mega auction, where they roped him in for 20 lakh rupees.
Why Jitesh Sharma is a best substitute for Sanju Samson
Due to the unavailability of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, the India cricket team were having only wicketkeeper-batsman ‘Ishan Kishan’ in their current T20I squad. Jitesh was not the only player if needed but is gun batsman at numbers 5 and 6. The 29-year-old batsman has played the role of a finisher beautifully for Punjab Kings and also for Vidarbha teams. Although, he is known to be one of those players who can hit big runs just from ball one.
