US President Joe Biden calls the Ukraine war a global issue before his Quad allies and tells the world is facing a dark hour over Ukraine. Also departs from previous US foreign policy and warns China on Taiwan.
US President Joe Biden placed Ukraine on agenda at the Quad summit in Tokyo, yesterday. Biden was there along with PM Narendra Modi of India, the Japanese PM Fumio Kishida and the Australian PM Anthony Albanese. The four countries also discussed the growing Chinese threat in the region. A day before, Biden had warned that the Chinese were “flirting with danger” over Taiwan. Biden warns World is Facing a “Dark Hour” in Ukraine.
Biden particularly sought to resolve any difference of opinion regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “The world is navigating a dark hour in our shared history”, he said to his Quad allies. The war has now become a global issue. It will affect the whole world as Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian grain exports worsens a global food crisis.
The Japanese premier, Fumio Kishida, agreed with Biden. He also stressed that a similar invasion must not happen in Asia. Biden soon followed with his tough stance on China. He stressed in his opening remarks that their meeting was about “democracies versus autocracies”. “Quad Summit: Biden tells World “.The Quad has to ensure that they deliver against Russia and China.
Biden was also supported by the new Australian PM, Anthony Albanese, yesterday. However, the Indian PM, Narendra Modi, hasn’t separately made any statements so far in the Quad meeting regarding Russia.
After their meeting, the Japanese PM Fumio Kishida stated before the press that the four countries agreed on the importance of rule of law, Sovereignty and territorial integrity. They will not tolerate any unilateral attempt to change the status-quo. Meanwhile, Russian and Chinese jets were reported to have patrolled the skies near Japan yesterday. Kishida called these Sino-Russian aerial manoeuvres “provocative”.
