Justice Indira Banerjee, a judge on the Supreme Court, resigned from her position on Friday after a little more than 4 years on the bench.
She was given a send-off by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), which was attended by, among others, Attorney General KK Venugopal, Chief Justice of India UU Lalit, other Supreme Court justices, and SCBA President Vikas Singh.
Justice Banerjee described how her father resisted her decision to enter the legal profession in her departure address.
“My father disagreed with my choice to pursue a legal career. He said that I didn’t put in enough effort and that the law is a vindictive mistress, therefore I must work really hard. That inspired me to pursue this job, “She remarked.
She also reflected on her time spent with Justice Ruma Pal, her senior in the bar, and his wife.
“Justice Pal was really motivating. There were highs and lows, such as days when you didn’t have a job. The most essential thing in this career is to not give up or become demoralized. Work will come if you put out the effort, “She spoke.
She made an interesting comment about quitting after 20.5 years on the bench.
“After 20.5 years, I’ll finally have some free time, so I’m looking forward to retiring. I didn’t have money when I had time, and I didn’t have time when I had money. I will have both time and money now since I will receive a pension “She stated.
She also shared some words of wisdom for aspiring attorneys.
Junior attorneys should be qualified, and ready, and contribute to the swift delivery of excellent justice.
