The Academy Awards has always had a strange relationship with comic book movies. The likes of Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix have taken home Oscars for their portrayals of the Joker in The Dark Knight and Joker, respectively, but many fans have felt superhero projects are not given fair consideration at these big awards shows.
Things for these larger-than-life projects have taken a turn for the better in recent years. Black Panther and Logan broke the rock in the categories Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay in consecutive years, and the aforementioned Joker scored the highest of 11 total nominations in 2020.
The Oscars did things a little differently this year during the official Academy Awards telecast. In addition to the traditional, official, voted-on-by-the-Academy categories, two new unofficial awards were given out, as determined entirely by users on Twitter.
One of those awards was dubbed the #OscarsCheerMoment Award, which was given to honour a favourite cheer-worthy moment from a movie. The winner was the film that got the most tweets on social media within a set amount of time, using that #OscarsCheerMoment hashtag.
When the votes were tabulated and the award was announced, it turned out that Zack Snyder’s Justice League was the winner, for the moment “The Flash Enters the Speed Force.”
This moment, as voted on by fans, topped Marvel Studios productions Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame, which rounded out the podium.
I’m not entirely sure why the Oscars didn’t limit the category to just films released in 2021; The Matrix, Dreamgirls, and Avengers: Endgame are all older films. (Zack Snyder’s Justice League wasn’t even released in theatres, but I guess that’s less of an issue these days than it used to be.)
Next in the list
The second-most cheer-worthy moment as voted by fans was ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ by Marvel Studios when the three Spider-Men unite.
3. Avengers: Endgame, a hype of superheroes by Marvel Studios came third entering the list with the scene where Avengers assemble to fight Thanos.
