Raila Odinga came second in Kenya’s presidential election and has challenged the election results. William Ruto won Kenya’s presidential election by 50.5% votes. On the other hand, Raila Odinga lost by 48.8%.
Mr. Odinga moved to the court to challenge the election results, in a voluminous 70-page legal argument, he alleges that the outcomes were altered.
To deny this an independent monitoring organization said that the election commission’s final results were correct.
Four of the seven electoral commissioners refused to go with the outcomes and said that the final result was “opaque”.
Nairobi, a presidential candidate arrived at the court to deliver the document with boxes of evidence, and also described the final result as “premeditated, unlawful, and criminal”.
His legal petitions called for different allegations.
- Tagged Wafula Chebukati, Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as “rogue”
- Also alleges that Chebukati was involved in the plan to “achieve a fraudulent result”.
- Questions are raised on tallying process.
- Argues that Wafula didn’t have the authority to announce the result without the consensus of other commissioners.
- According to one of the petitions, the plan was in the knowledge of Mr. Ruto but did not have supporting evidence.
- Points towards the temperament of the voting results to ensure that Mr. Ruto crossed the 50% plus one vote threshold to avoid a second-round run-off.
Mr. Ruto and Mr. Chebukati are yet to respond to the allegations.
The second runner-up in the election is Raila Odinga
Previously Mr. Odinga has been an opposition candidate, but in this election, he was backed up by outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta.
This was the fifth time that the 77-year-old had candidacy for president. Also, this third time that he had approached the court to get the outcome overturned.
About a week ago the national tallying center witnessed chaos moments before the final result of the august 9 poll was going to be released.
There was a ruckus created at the scene with Mr. Odinga’s political allies crashing the stage. In this clash, two electoral commissioners were injured.
Despite this, Mr. Chebukati announced the results by handing over the certificate to Mr. Ruto.
The election commission head said that he faced many threats despite which he performed his duties.
Last week Mr. Ruto told journalists, “I’m a Democrat. I believe in the rule of law. I respect our institutions”.
