Kim Jong-Un, the leader of North Korea, has ordered a “radical change” in agricultural output amid worries about alleged food shortages in the impoverished nation.
On the second day of a crucial party meeting, he stressed the significance of hitting grain production goals and changing production to lay the base for the steady and sustained growth of agriculture according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
Moreover, during the second day of the seventh enlarged plenary meeting of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Kim stated that achieving grain production goals this year was a top priority and stressed the worth of stable agricultural production, according to the official news agency KCNA.
North Korea’s actions were not further described in the report, but their leader insisted that adjustments must be implemented immediately.
Researchers claim that collective fields make up the majority of North Korea’s agricultural output. These farms frequently house several small farmers who work together to create the crops.
Kim Jong-un statement
Kim’s comment comes amid reports of worsening food scarcity in the nation, though North Korea has refuted claims that it is unable to feed its people.
The North’s food condition appeared to have deteriorated according to the Unification Ministry of South Korea earlier this month.
The primary objective of the meeting, according to Pyongyang, was to identify strategies for achieving this year’s grain production target and bringing about a radical shift in agricultural production within a few years to open the door for stable and sustainable growth in agriculture.
Kim stated that nothing is unattainable as long as a strong leadership structure has been established throughout the entire Party according to the KCNA. He also expressed the unwavering determination and will of the Party Central Committee to carry out a revolutionary turn in agricultural production without fail.
Kim made his comments less than a week after South Korea’s Unification Ministry claims. Kim is the third generation of his family to govern secretive North Korea.
According to a report published last month by an American think tank, North Korea’s harvest cycle for 2020–21 probably failed to meet minimum human requirements and the nation is now on the verge of famine.
According to the report, the facts presented thus far indicate a significant worsening of living conditions and a persistent complex humanitarian catastrophe with food insecurity at its core.
North Korea’s economy continues to be hampered by strict self-imposed border lockdowns intended to halt Covid-19 outbreaks. Further, North Korea is already subject to severe international sanctions because of its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile projects.
The stalemate over nuclear weapons and sanctions must be resolved in part to find a long-term answer to the issues, but economic reforms are also necessary.
