He has confirmed that the FIFA World Cup Final will be Lionel Messi’s final match. Currently, he is competing at his fifth World Cup, surpassing the four of Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano. When Argentina faces either France or Morocco in the World Cup final on Sunday in Qatar, Lionel Messi has declared that it will be his final game. Messi, who on Tuesday led Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Croatia in the semi-final, will earn his 172nd cap this weekend when he attempts to lead his nation to its first World Cup victory since 1986.
The Argentina captain after scoring from the penalty spot and contributing equally to Julian Alvarez’s other two goals against Croatia to advance his nation to the final. He announced that the final match would be his last in the sky and white stripes. With his fifth goal in Qatar, he also surpassed Gabriel Batistuta to become the most influential goal scorer for the Albiceleste at World Cups with 11 goals.
At Qatar’s Lusail Stadium, the PSG forward performed for a huge crowd that many hailed as his best in recent times. The World Cup will be Lionel Messi’s final opportunity to win before he leaves. After falling short to Germany in Brazil in 2014, he finished as runner-up.
WHAT Lionel MESSI SAID –
“I am very happy for finishing my journey in World Cups in a final, to play the last game in a final. That is very gratifying,” Messi told reporters after the game. “Everything that I lived in this World Cup has been emotional, seeing how much it has been enjoyed in Argentina. There are a lot of years from this year to the next one. I do not think I will be able to do that. To finish this way is brilliant.”
THE GREATER ASPECT:
Messi continued by saying that after 36 years of suffering, Argentina will do whatever it takes to win the remarkable title. We will use all of our efforts, just as we have in the past, to ensure that this time we truly succeed. I have been enjoying my time with the national team for the past few years. Everything that is occurring to us is incredibly exciting to me.
It is just amazing to win Copa America, go to the World Cup with 36 straight victories, and then cap off that run in the championship game. I wish the Argentineans a good time and that they enjoy what we are doing. They should not question our commitment to giving our all.
WHAT IS UPCOMING FOR MESSI?
As Argentina waits to learn who they will play in the final on December 18, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will be watching Wednesday’s second semi-final between Morocco and France. Messi is currently playing for PSG and has been heavily linked with a move back to their previous team Barcelona. Although the Catalans are searching for ways to re-sign him on a playing deal, one of the options could see him take an off-field role at Camp Nou in short order.
