Diogo Jota has scored 34 goals in 85 appearances since joining Liverpool from Wolves in the summer of 2020. The Portugal international has had his five-year contract extended and enhanced since coming at Anfield.
Diogo Jota, a Liverpool attacker, has signed a long-term contract deal with the club.
The new contract for the 25-year-old, who has scored 34 goals in 85 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolves in the summer of 2020, is expected to last until 2027.
Following the departure of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich, Jota joins teammate and Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah in signing a new contract with the club this summer.
“Well, I have to admit, [I’m] quite proud.” After signing his new deal, Jota informed Liverpoolfc.com.
“Obviously, I’ve established myself as a significant player in this club since I arrived two years ago – that’s what I wanted from the start.”
Signing a new long-term contract is undoubtedly a testament to the club of their trust in me as a player. It’s clearly very important for me to demonstrate that I’ll be here for a while.
Jota has missed Liverpool’s preseason games and Saturday’s Community Shield triumph against Manchester City due to a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Portugal in June.
He revealed that he will be absent for “a few more weeks,” leaving him out of Saturday’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Fulham and the following matchday’s encounter with Crystal Palace at Anfield.
“Unfortunately for me, I had an upset in this pre-season since I got hurt [in] the final game of the season while playing with Portugal,” Jota explained. “So, when I was returning in this pre-season, I felt it a little bit again. So, I’d think it’ll be a couple more weeks.”
When Liverpool paid Wolves £45 million to bring Diogo Jota to Anfield in September 2020, some people were surprised, but it has proven to be yet another wise move by the club’s management.
The striker was a one-in-three guy at Molineux, but since moving to Anfield, he has boosted his scoring rate to become an essential component of the Reds’ forward line, scoring 34 goals in 85 appearances across all competitions, including 24 in the Premier League, with four assists.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admires Jota’s flexibility, with the Portugal international – who, despite his 5ft 10in height, has shown to be one of the finest headers in the Premier League – capable of playing through the middle as a traditional No 9, or on the left flank of the attack.
That is why FSG was keen to add Jota, 25, to an already extensive list of players who have accepted to new long-term contracts with the club. Now, though, Klopp will be hoping the player will be back in action sooner rather than later after suffering an untimely hamstring injury during pre-season.
