Companies like Skycorp, Phison Electronics Corp, and Ramon are seen planning extensive computational data testing.
On 12th September, Skycorp announced its plans to send Taiwan-based, Phison Electronic corp commercial solid state drive to the moon in the upcoming year.
Before that, it was reported that Ramon. Space is planning to provide the required technology for a lander, which is being developed in Israel’s Beresheet 2 lunar mission for 2025.
Currently, the company is testing the Phison technology in the ISSI experiment on the International Space Station. It plans on testing these technologies on the moon, which currently works on a solid state drive, to upgrade it to an upper version of ISS drive, which would be designed to offer eight terabytes of data storage.
Lunar mission Agenda
This hard drive is planned to be sent to the south pole of our natural satellite on the LoneStar LLC’s data server demonstration slate to be able to fly on a specific Intuitive Machines lander as a part of USA-based NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Service Program.
For missions that are low earth and geostationary orbit, deep space missions need extensive computing capabilities although even today companies are reluctant to adopt technology without space heritage.
The CEO of Skycorp company, Dennis Wingo, during a conversation with SpaceNews, exclaimed that they are “breaking through the wall” at the world satellite business week conference further adding that they hope to bring advanced computing and data storage technology into the space arena.
Similarly, Israel-based companies like Ramon. Space and Lulav Space are working hand in hand on a navigation system for the ‘Beresheet 2’ mission being developed by Space IL, yet another Israel-based company.
The mission, which is a follow-up to the Beresheet mission that crashed on the moon in 2019 has two smaller landers installed.
Wingo, who also happens to be the founder of Skycorp, said that advanced computers are moving to space and the test of the Phison hard drive ‘helps get the ball rolling.’
