Iran Earthquake: The quake hit 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of the port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province, the USGS said.
At least five people were killed by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in southern Iran early Saturday morning, according to state media. The region was reportedly struck by two further powerful earthquakes of up to magnitude 6.3.
Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, the chief of emergency management in the province of Hormozgan on Iran’s Gulf coast, told state TV that five people were killed in the quake and that 12 others were hospitalized. “Rescue efforts have been completed, and we are currently supplying tents as temporary shelter.”
IRNA said that a magnitude 6.3 and magnitude 6.1 earthquake followed the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that leveled the town of Sayeh Khosh near Iran’s Gulf coast. More than a dozen aftershocks occurred.

Foad Moradzadeh, governor of Bandar Lengeh county, was cited by the state news agency IRNA as saying, “All of the fatalities perished in the initial quake, and no one was injured in the two subsequent quakes since everyone had already fled their houses.”
The US Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of the coastal city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province. The earthquake occurred about one minute after a magnitude 5.7 tremor.
IRNA reported that the governor of Hormozgan, Mahdi Dosti, stated that five persons were killed and 19 others were injured.
Dosti said that most of the damage happened in the nearby village of Sayeh Khost.
In November 2012, twin earthquakes of magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 struck the province of Hormozgan, killing one person.
Iran is a region of intense seismic activity due to its location at the intersection of many tectonic plates and fault lines.
Iran’s worst earthquake occurred in 1990 when a 7.4 magnitude tremor killed 40,000 people in the country’s north.
