Rift between BJP and the ‘non-BJP’ front is not new, it has been there for a long time now. Opposition has been trying to form an alliance to fight and contest against BJP. Some instances include one such effort before 2019 general elections, a mega alliance that was formed in 2017 UP elections and many more. But all these efforts didn’t fetch the desired result and most of the times there were many leaders who refrained from even entering these alliances. This also gives a fair idea why the opposition ‘unity’ is a very far-fetched idea. But Mamta Banerjee, one such big leader of opposition has been trying to establish this unity.
Why Opposition Unity is Important and Mamta Banerjee ’s Efforts for it
TMC leader Mamata Banerjee has asked all the non-BJP CMs, leaders and parties even Congress which has a rift with TMC and is a parent party of TMC meet up and set up an assembled alliance to fight a battle against the “non-constitutional BJP system”.
Mamta Banerjee asked for a gathering to discuss plans and strategies to fight against BJP and also focus on the bounded opposition and principle ideas that has common consent which will open ways for the better governance and a government that is in national interest
She criticized the BJP government for using vendetta politics and the unconstitutional way of governance. She even said this government is just for using central authorities like the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) against political rival and carry out political rivalry.
The BJP, notwithstanding, asserted that the TMC’s public aspirations have failed so they are just using this unified opposition to hide those failures, while the Congress said Bengal’s party is weak to fight against the saffron party.
In her letter, Banerjee additionally slammed the BJP government over the way Delhi Special Police (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and the CVC (Amendment) Bill, 2021 were passed in the Parliament in winter session which were passed even after walkout of opposition. “These regulations empower the Center to expand the tenure of heads of central authorities as long as five years which not only gives saffron party lot of power but is also an explicit infringement of a past Supreme Court judgment,” she said.
“It is certainly clear that the opposition is targeted purposely, and the BJP-ruled states gets free levy from these authorities so that their hollow governance and administration can be painted as very rosy,” the letter said. Banerjee also claimed that the BJP is influencing judiciary too which the height of the unconstitutional governance. “Over and over, the BJP is attempting to go after the constitution and federal structure of the nation, thus hampering the judicial system of the country,” she said.
Banerjee calling for unified opposition came in a very interesting time when her party is overcoming a political firestorm over Birbhum killings, wherein nine individuals were killed, and a few of its leaders confronting CBI and ED investigation in different cases.
Recently, soon after the BJP won the assembly elections in 4 states including Uttar Pradesh, Banerjee contacted many regional powers to come together and push an anti-BJP stance however had kept INC out of any such alliance as the Congress is facing many issues and is in a downfall
Responding to the turn of events, West Bengal BJP representative Samik Bhattacharya said that the TMC’s public aspirations have failed miserably. “We have seen the TMC’s public overdrive in 2014 and 2019. After its misfortune in Goa and Tripura I hope they learn a lesson and do burn themselves in this fire of expanding” he said.
Senior Congress leader Abdul Mannan asserted that the TMC needs more public support and reliability to fight against the BJP. “The TMC needs reliability in the battle against the BJP. As the Trinamool Congress is confronting the cases of corruption, money laundering and criminal cases, their reliability is already very less.
CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said that the idea of anti-BJP narrative is welcomed as Left has always been against the RSS and its supporting ideologies but one should focus on TMC’s intention of calling for this unified opposition, we all know how TMC helped BJP in Goa and Tripura by splitting the votes and helping the saffron party.
