The incident triggered a new wave of horror, as the city faces a severe lockdown due to a surge in cases. Man declared Dead at China’s Hospitals and Found Alive at Morgue.
In a bizarre incident, a senior citizen was mistaken to be dead at an elderly care center in Shanghai and was taken to a morgue while he was still alive. During the city’s latest Covid outbreak, the investigation into the shocking incident triggered a new wave of anguish. The prolonged lockdown has strained the medical facilities in the town.
Videos from the nursing center were widely circulated on social media about a yellow body being carried by two morgue workers outside the Shanghai Xinchang Zhèng welfare hospital. The man in protective clothing was unzipping the bag in front of the center staff, insisting that the man was alive.
The staff member checks the sign for life and reseals the bag against the protest of bystanders who believe that the person would suffocate.
As per the video, the staff later intentionally mixed up the bodies, and the elder was seen being wheeled back to the center. Putuo’s Civil Bureau Affair confirmed the mix-up and set up an investigation task force to severely punish those accountable for the crime.
Even though the nursing home was apologetic for the incident, it triggered a new wave of horror for many Shanghai residents.
After the incident came to light, four staff members were dismissed from their positions, including the director of the nursing facility and three officials from the district civil affairs. The officials are being further investigated while the authorities have revoked a doctor, named Tian’s, license.
The mistake comes when Shanghai entered a new wave of Covid cases. According to reports, the senior citizen has been sent to the hospital for further treatments and to stabilize his vital signs.
The Shanghai local government has come under mounting criticism for its ways of handling the Omicron variant in the city of 26 billion people. The city has been under lockdown since March 1 with strict restrictions as close contact has created havoc in the town with people unable to access essential medical care.
In the latest wave, more than 400 deaths have been recorded.
