Ponniyin Selvan is divided into 2 segments, one set to release on 30th September while the other goes in theatres in 2024. Currently, both films are in post-production.
Reports claim that the big-budgeted Ponniyin Selvan is a historical period drama. It is an adventure that is set back in the 10th century.
Translated into English as Son of Kaveri, Ponniyin Selvan is set in the period of the Cholas. It aims to transport the audience to the era of Rajaraja Chola, one of the greatest kings of the Golden Age of India who is credited for building the Thanjavur Temple.
Dealing with the power struggles and family conspiracies of the great Chola Empire, Ponniyin Selvan is highly based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s Tamil Novel of the same name that was serialized in the 1950s. Considered one of the greatest Tamil Novels ever, it was later released as a book in 1955 divided into 5 volumes equating to over 2000 pages.
With a stellar cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Karthi, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Trisha, and Jayam Ravi, director Mani Ratnam has put up an alluring show. He has also been able to rope in one of the greatest music directors of Indian Cinema, Academy Award-winning A.R. Rahman.
Cinematographer Ravi Varman and Editor Sreekar Prasad collaborate on this magnum opus with Mani Ratnam. Thota Tharrani features as the Production Designer for Ponniyin Selvan which is being produced by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies.
