The Department of Fisheries in Manipur hosted a National Fish Farmers’ Day on Monday at the Directorate of Fisheries Training Hall in Lamphelpat, Imphal.Â
The event, which takes place on July 10th each year, was organised to celebrate the successful implementation of induced breeding. The Director of Fisheries & Intellectual Property (Fisheries & IPR) H Balkrishna Sing was present at the event.
He added,” The development of the blue revolution began in India with the introduction of induced breeding. National Fish Farmers’ Day is celebrated annually to commemorate the achievements of the aquaculture industry”.
The Director declared that it was a momentous occasion for fish farmers in the state, and that their commitment and contribution should be acknowledged. He expressed his appreciation for the farmers and encouraged them to continue their hard work and dedication in order to contribute to the state’s economy.
Further the director informed The Director indicated that the Department of Fisheries has implemented various measures in order to ensure the well-being of fish farmers. The Department has been attempting to address the issues faced by fish farmers.
While counting it’s day, he declared that for the benefit of fish farmers under the PMMSY(Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana ) Scheme for 2021-22, the state building of an ice-plant and a fish market capable of increasing fish production has been implemented for the first time.
About The Whole Day
The department implemented a range of programs to provide advantages to farmers. The department endeavoured to accommodate all the recipients of the scheme, recognizing their dedication and hard work.
Last Year on October 26, 2022, the Department of Fisheries had organised an annual fish fair cum fish crop competition in Imphal, which culminated in the awarding of prizes to the participants of the competition.
The top three producers in the Individual Category were rewarded with cash prizes and citations. The top indigenous fish producer was rewarded with 20 consolation prizes. Two district officers with the highest fish production were rewarded (Hill / Valley).

National Fish Farmer’s Day is observed annually on the 10th of July as a tribute to the pioneering work of the Indian fishery sector conducted by the duo of Professor Dr. Hiralal Choudhury and Dr. K. H. Alikunhi on the day in 1957. This day marked the introduction of induced breeding and reproduction of Indian Major Carps using the Hypophysation technique, which ultimately revolutionized the Indian inland aquaculture sector.
