Govt. & Opposition standoff
With both sides showing stubbornness over the Manipur row, the monsoon parliament session for the fourth day is also expected to show no progress. The opposition is adamant on their demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement in the parliament on the Manipur issue.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the Centre is ready for the discussion on the sensitive issue of Manipur and is ready to make people aware of the situation in Manipur. The government is trying to resolve the issue through discussion. They alleged that the opposition is not allowing discussion on the issue.
On the contrary, the opposition seems to be in no mood to back down and wants nothing less than the Prime Minister’s statement.
The Centre also alleged that the Opposition does not want the house to work smoothly while it wants a discussion on Manipur. The senior congress leader told NDTV “There has been a horrendous loss of lives… there were rapes and violence and displacement. And now it is spreading. In Mizoram, there has been a backlash and Meities are fleeing the state.” There is nothing bigger than the Manipur situation that needs the PM’s attention, he also stated.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that Defence Minister Rajanth Singh also called some opposition leaders and tried to convince them to help in the smooth functioning of the house.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh suspended
Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP was suspended from the parliament for the rest of the session for repeatedly violating the directives of the chair. Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced Sanjay Singh’s suspension after a motion proposed by Union minister Piyush Goyal was backed by the House. The opposition MPs camped outside the parliament in protest.
The Lok Sabha Om Birla called a meeting of the floor leaders to break the deadlock.
Rajya Sabha MPs Raghav Chadha, K Keshava Rao, KR Suresh Reddy, Joginipalli Santosh Kumar, Badugula Lingaiah Yadav, Ranjeet Ranjan, Manoj Jha, Syed Naseer Hussain, Tiruchi Siva, Imran Pratapgadhi and Rajiv Shukla have given suspension of Business Notice in Rajya Sabha under rule 267 and demand discussion on ongoing violence in Manipur. In Lok Sabha, Congress MPs Manish Tewari, and Gaurav Gogoi have moved Adjournment Motion Notice demanding a discussion on the Manipur situation.
