Gael Bernal is set to star in a Marvel Halloween special film based on Werewolfs.
Halloween may have passed us by for another year, but Marvel is still thinking about the holiday, and it’s planning a scary Disney+ special for next year. Although details are still scant, The Wrap reports that we know who will star: Gael Garcia Bernal.
Even though the special’s title has yet to be confirmed, the site has learned that the Marvel team may be taking the Werewolf by Night concept to the big screen. The Halloween Special is expected to start filming in early 2022.
While the project’s details are being kept under wraps, sources believe the character might be based on “Werewolf by Night,” a moniker shared by two other Marvel heroes.
Jack Russell was created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog and originally appeared in a 1972 issue of “Marvel Spotlight” based on designs by Stan Lee and Roy Thomas. Russell featured in 43 points of the “Werewolf by Night” series, which concluded in 1977.
Russell is a descendent of the Lycanthropes, a mystically altered branch of humans capable of shifting on his own will and preserving his intelligence when changed, even without the presence of a full moon.
That series is significant for including the first appearance of Moon Knight, a character who will get his own Disney+ series starring Oscar Isaac in 2022.
Last year, in “Werewolf by Night” (Vol. 3) #1, Marvel debuted a new iteration of Jake Gomez’s character.
Gomez, a member of the Hopi Native American tribe whose family has been afflicted with lycanthropy, comes into confrontation with a sinister pharmaceutical firm exploiting members of the tribe, thanks to the literary team of Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff, and Scot Eaton.

It’s unclear which version of “Werewolf by Night” will serve as the basis for the TV special, if either.
Marvel Studios may now experiment with alternative themes and storytelling on the streaming platform, thanks to the launch of Disney+.
On the platform, shows including “Wandavision” (which included a Halloween episode), “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and “Loki” debuted to tremendous acclaim. “What If?” was Marvel Studios’ most recent foray into animation, and it just finished its first season.
“The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” just concluded production and will air during the holiday season of 2022.
