A mother and her kid died in Bengaluru after the reinforcing framework for a Namma Metro pillar that was still under construction collapsed.
A two-wheeler carrying a woman and her two-year-old boy was struck by an under-construction Metro pillar today in Bengaluru, Karnataka, killing the mother and her child while injuring the husband and daughter.
The incident occurred about 11 a.m. on the Outer Ring Road near HBR Layout, when the TMT bars erected for the construction of a pillar collapsed on their scooter, according to police reports. The pillar is estimated to be over 40 feet tall and several tonnes in weight. Bystanders transported the duo to a local hospital, but the woman and her two-and-a-half-year-old kid died from their injuries.
“Both sustained brain injuries, and we did everything we could to save them. There has already been significant blood loss and a drop in blood pressure “said the doctors who treated them.
How the incident took place
According to officials, the couple was riding their bike across the stretch when the iron pillar smashed into them. The victim identified as Tejasvani and her son Vihan was seriously injured in the accident and were transported to a local hospital by passersby. The victim’s spouse Lohith and daughter are currently being treated in the hospital. According to the authorities, Lohith was the driver and Tejasvini was the pillion rider, and both were wearing helmets.
The pillar was roughly 40 feet long and constructed of metal rods. Work on the outer ring road has been halted for two days while an inquiry is conducted.”Metro pillar fell down in ORR near HBR Layout; traffic is snarled at several crossroads,” Bengaluru traffic police tweeted. Our traffic field officers were present, and traffic will be cleared very shortly.”
After the crash, traffic jams were observed on ORR. “At one point, as school buses hit the road, traffic had piled up to Ramamurthy Nagar,” stated a local traffic police officer. Following the event, motorists reported high traffic in and around Hennur, Kalyan Nagar, HBR Layout, Nagawara, and neighbouring regions.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has promised a thorough investigation into the incident. “I just got to know about it, we will get it investigated. “We will investigate the cause of the pillar collapse and pay compensation,” he told reporters in Dharwad.
BMRCL to help the victim’s family
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has promised a financial assistance package worth INR 20 lakh for the family, as well as an internal audit.
Anjum Pervez, the managing director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), declared that the deceased’s family would receive a payment of 20 lakhs. “BMRCL will pay for every penny of the injured people’s medical care. The site’s building activity will cease for two days. A reinforcement structure, not a pillar, has collapsed. It was not built of concrete. There are four ropes on it, and one of them appears to be broken. To submit a report on this incident, we are asking the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.). Additionally, we will ask our internal team to look into the situation. An occurrence of this size has never occurred before.
This occurrence serves as a reminder of the officials’, contractors, and officials’ negligence. There were questions about the workmanship because the pillar toppled before the building was finished.
