Mexican President Obrador will submit a handwritten proposal to the UN for a truce for five years between all nations to promote peace and support war-suffering countries.
The UN will receive a request from Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador requesting the establishment of a committee comprised of three global leaders to promote a five-year global ceasefire.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres were suggested as members of the highest commission by the Mexican president.
“I will make the proposal in writing, I will present it to the UN. I have been saying it and I hope the media will help us to spread it. Because they do not speak when it is not convenient for them,” said Mexican President.
“The three of them meet and soon present a proposal to stop the war everywhere, and reach an agreement to seek a truce of at least five years, so that governments around the world dedicate themselves to support their peoples, especially the people who are suffering the most from the war and its effects; that we have five years without tension, without violence and with peace,” said President Obrador.
Since president Obrador has claimed to submit the proposal in writing to the UN, it is anticipated that the list would be discussed during the UN General Assembly’s annual session, which will start in September.
In the session, the international body will tackle the crises in Ukraine, Gaza, and the local conflict over Taiwan. Modi and other head of state representatives are anticipated to attend.
In a conference conducted a few days ago, president Obrador said, “our country’s stance is that wars and armed confrontations do not exist and agreements are sought through dialogue. Nations can agree on a truce of at least five years to be able to face the crisis affecting the people. A truce that ends the war, confrontation, and provocations.”
The Mexican president has urged a stop to warlike behaviour and invited China, Russia, and the United States to work toward peace in the hopes that the three nations will pay attention and accept mediation like the one Mexico is suggesting.
In addition, he suggested that all national governments unite in solidarity with the UN rather than the bureaucratic process through which initiatives and recommendations are put out.
