Sudan attacks Ethiopia, Officials from Ethiopia claimed that amid fighting in the disputed al-Fashaga region, Sudan’s military forces fired.
Sudan accused Ethiopian forces of kidnaping 7 soldiers and 1 civilian, after which their vandalized bodies were found. Whereas, the Ethiopian government denies the accusation and says it’s a local rebel group responsible for this act and has promised to investigate the attack.
Sudan had filed a formal complaint with the United Nations Security Council over the killings.
But Sudan thinks it’s a waste of time and has already sent army reinforcements to the disputed border region. Sudan’s army fired long-distance artillery from Monday morning until Tuesday afternoon. Jabal Kala al-Laban is now in the jurisdiction of the Sudanese army, and a base there has been demolished.
Uncertainty surrounds whether the site belongs to an allying fighter group or the Ethiopian army.Â
Reason Behind Sudan Attacks Ethiopia:
200 sq km. the wide, rich, and fertile land of Al-Fashaga on the border of Ethiopia and Sudan has been a source of conflict for a century, between both countries.
An agreement was made in 2008 between both countries. According to the agreement, the land will be administered by the government of Sudan, but Ethiopian farmers will be allowed to work on the land. The deal worked, and people in the region worked peacefully, until 2020. Â
When fighting broke out in Ethiopia between the government and a rebel group called TPLF of the north region, many refugees fled to Sudan in search of protection.
The tension between the two nations rose after Sudan ejected the Ethiopian farmers and soldiers from the Al-Fashaga region. Also, Sudan is accused of helping TPLF in the attacks.Â
