Lovlina Borgohain, PV Sindhu, Aditi Ashok and Avani Lekhara were among other nominees for Indian Sportswoman of the Year honor.
Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu won the award for BBC Indian Sportswomen of the Year 2021 on Monday. Mirabai represented India in Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the weightlifting 49 kg category. She became the first Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic silver medal for India.
The former world champion was competing with badminton champion PV Sindhu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain and golfer Aditi Ashok and para-shooter Avani Lekhara for the prestigious honor.
These five nominees were selected by a panel of sports journalists by British broadcasters, and winner was selected on the basis of public voting. The 27-year-old is training for Common Wealth Games and Asian Games ahead after winning Singapore weightlifting International in 2022.
Meanwhile, Karnam Malleshwari, another weightlifter and two-time world champion won BBC Lifetime Achievement award. She was the first Indian woman weightlifter to win an Olympic medal for India. Another rising star, 18-year-old Shefali Verma, Indian cricketer won Emerging Player award who recently represented India at Women’s World Cup in New Zealand
Chanu bagged this title in the third edition of the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year held in New Delhi. PV Sindhu won the same title in the year 2019, while chess grandmaster Koneru Humpy received the honor in 2020.
“I am currently training in the United States of America. I will give my best to win gold at this year’s Asian and Commonwealth Games. Thanks again to BBC India for honoring me with The BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award,” expressed Chanu in a press release.
