The situation near the Assam-Meghalaya border where six people were killed in a village where violent clashes took place remains tense yet peaceful, officials.
Restraints under Section 144 of the CrPC have been imposed where the clashes occurred and its nearby areas.
Reportedly, the situation near the border is peaceful, and the strong presence of the security personnel has been assured till everything normalizes.
In the disputed location in West Karbi Anglong where six people including the forest guard were killed in the early hours of Tuesday along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Vehicles from Meghalaya state have been restricted to enter Assam after multiple series of attacks.
Police personnel has put up barricades at the entry points to Meghalaya from Assam. And asked people to not visit the state with a number plate of Assam.
Deputy Commissioner of Guwahati police Sudhakar Singh told PTI, “We are requesting people not to travel to Meghalaya in Assam-registered cars. If there is any urgency, they should hire a Meghalaya taxi from the border points.”
He also added that not many restraints have been put on vehicles like trucks and tankers.
The body of the forest guard – Bidyasing Lekhtke, has been handed over to his family by the Assam government as said by the official.
At least 5 social organizations in Meghalaya have declared two days of peaceful protest against those accountable for the incident at Mukroh Village.
Assam-Meghalaya had a long-standing inter-state dispute in 12 areas. In March, both states signed a memorandum of understanding to end conflicts in six areas.
A group of villagers of Meghalaya damaged and burnt down a forest office of West Karbi Anglong, Assam. The Assam government had said that they will hand the investigation to the central or neutral agency. Also has transferred district SP and suspended the office-in-charge of Jirikinding Police station and forest protection officer of Kheroni Forest range.
