On Tuesday afternoon in Mumbai, a 50-year-old businessman left valuable 25 tolas (292.5 gm) gold jewellery in an autorickshaw, which was retrieved by Pant Nagar police within five hours.Â
According to cops, the businessman’s son had recently married and was on his way to the bank to deposit all of the jewellery in the safe. He exited the autorickshaw, however, without retrieving the bag.Â
Mahesh Shah, a native of Ghatkopar East’s Vallabh Nagar, owns and operates a travel agency.Â
“On Monday, around 1 p.m., Shah hired an autorickshaw opposite his apartment to go to the bank,”
said Pant Nagar police station Sub-inspector Rahul Waghmare. Shah forgot to retrieve his suitcase, which held 25 tolas of gold jewellery when he exited the car. Shah hurried to the police station as soon as he realised what had transpired to file a report.”Â
According to an officer, the car driver did not notify the police after discovering the suitcase and instead stored the valuables at his home.Â
“To find the lost bag, senior inspector Ravidatta Sawant established a squad. We examined surveillance footage and discovered one rickshaw with a Tirupati Balaji sign on the front mirror. Because the number captured was hazy, we double-checked it against the challan. We identified the driver as Mohan Pal, an auto driver from the Parkside neighbourhood, and rushed to his home.
When questioned, he publicly denied about the bag at first but subsequently admitted to keeping it at home. We let him go with a warning nothing was taken from the luggage,” Waghmare explained.
