After the Vishwa Hindu Parishad filed a petition to the city police chief, the Delhi Police rejected permission for stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui’s event in central Delhi to preserve communal harmony, officials said today.
According to a senior police officer, the central district police warned the licencing unit that the event would undermine local peace and harmony in its report.
On Sunday, August 28, Munawar Faruqui was set to perform in the Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium in the C-Block of the SPM Civic Center in the heart of Delhi.
The licence for the concert was refused on the same day that the central district police’s complaint was submitted to the licencing section, according to the police.
The programme or show is already noted on the form where you are requesting authorization when it won’t affect the communal harmony in the area.
In a letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner on Thursday, Surendra Kumar Gupta, the state president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, or VHP, begged him not to approve Mr. Faruqui’s show.
The letter claimed that Mr. Faruqui would host a presentation at the Civic Center’s Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium on August 28 and claimed that because of his purported mockery of Hindu gods and goddesses, there has lately been racial unrest in Hyderabad.
The Bajrang Dal and VHP employees would stage a protest if the show went on, Mr. Gupta warned the police.
The show’s producer declined to comment on the matter.
When word of the show’s cancellation spread, Trinamool Congress MP Mohua tweeted, “VHP bullies spineless @Delhipolice, cancel @munawar0018 show. Gandhiji said, “I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed.” Is India@75’s communal harmony so fragile today that it is disrupted by comedy shows?
Fans came over to support him
The performance was set to run from 2 PM to 9:30 PM at the Dr. SPM Civic Center’s Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium. It was viewed as a privately organised performance for which permission had already been granted.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad demanded that the event be postponed in a letter to Delhi Police and warned to demonstrate if it went on as scheduled.
Munawar Faruqui has a sizable fan base, which grew significantly after he took first place in Kangana Ranaut’s reality series Lock Up. The comedian has been trending on Twitter ever since his gig in Delhi was postponed. Support is coming from his followers.

Why did “Munawar Faruqui” topic came to politics
The public was outraged by Munawar Faruqui for his vile mockery of the Hindu victims of the Godhra train burning incident, a tragedy in which 59 people perished after the Sabarmati Express, carrying karsevaks from Ayodhya, was set on fire purportedly by a Muslim mob near Godhra station. In one of his stand-up performances from the year 2020, Faruqui was shown mocking the victims of the Godhra catastrophe and downplaying the atrocity.
Earlier in Telangana
Last Saturday, Munawar Faruqui conducted a stand-up comedy concert in Hyderabad under heavy security. Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the leader of the Telangana BJP and HYD MLA Raja Singh, had called for a boycott of the program, stating that Faruqui had made fun of Hindu deities.
On August 19, the police cancelled the show following a complaint filed by a hitherto unknown Hindutva organisation called Jai Sri Ram Sena Sanghatan to the City Police Commissioner, alleging the show “Dongri to Nowhere” would hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus.
MLA Raja Singh’s arrest
T Raja Singh, a Goshamahal MLA, was allegedly suspended by the Bharatiya Janata Party on August 23 for a post about the Prophet Muhammad. Raja Singh was previously detained on Tuesday following violent protests that erupted in Hyderabad last night at the South Zone DCP office. Protesters called for immediate action against Singh and chanted the Islamist chant “Sar Tan Se Juda,” which calls for his beheading for “blasphemy” against the Prophet Muhammad. Similar to the response following Nupur Sharma’s expulsion from the party, the BJP’s decision to suspend Raja Singh has angered even party members online.
On August 21, Raja Singh published a humorous video, and the protesters say that he insulted the Prophet Muhammad in it. Several people complained about MR.Singh
The government was the subject of numerous complaints alleging that he had offended the Islamists’ religious sensibilities. According to reports, calls for his beheading were also made at the police station. The BJP MLA was subsequently arrested by the police and booked at the Dabeerpura police station under IPC section 153A (Promoting hatred between two communities) and related parts.
It’s interesting to note that Raja Singh uploaded the video in opposition to purported comedian Munawar Faruqui and his performance in Hyderabad. Raja has been demonstrating against Faruqui’s performance in Hyderabad, and on August 19, he was even placed in a preventive prison to make sure he wouldn’t interfere with the comedian’s presence there.
Singh revealed in a social media video that went viral that the “comedian” had made jokes that made fun of Hindu gods and shouldn’t have been performed in Hyderabad.
“Let them observe what will occur if he is granted permission to perform in Hyderabad. We are going to bash him up everywhere the programme is held. Singh allegedly stated in the video: “We will set fire to anyone who gives him a location.” –Raja Singh said in the video
