Among some, the link between exercise and good mental health can be a source of despair. Exercise, like a snake eating its tail, can help you get out of a gloom, but it’s the mental health low that prevents you from generating the energy to exercise in the first place.
However, new research reveals that playing, singing, or listening to music may provide similar mental health advantages to exercising or losing weight.
About the research project
The study which revolves around the question: Are music-making and listening interventions associated with positive changes in health-related quality of life? Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open, the review was authored by J Matt McCrary, PhD, Eckart Altenmüller, MD and Clara Kretschmer.
The researchers looked at data from 26 prior studies, which involved 779 people in total and were done in Australia, Brazil, China (Hong Kong SAR), Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
This was primarily to determine the impact of music on our mental health in comparison to the impact of non-medical interventions such as exercising or working out on mental health.
Music, on the other hand, has physical benefits that aren’t often apparent. Targeted music treatment (i.e., utilising a certain sort of music to stimulate a desired response) has been reported to help people with asthma and autism, according to research. Patients with brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and epilepsy can often reclaim a bit of their prior self that many believe has been lost to the disease thanks to focused therapy.
There have been studies that suggest a strong link between music and improved mood and mental health, which may explain why music therapy is used to treat a variety of ailments, including depression. The amount to which music can be beneficial, though, is a question that scientists are still debating.
