The 50-year-old billionaire, with a black cowboy hat and sunglasses at the opening of Tesla’s $1.1 billion factories in Texas made the comments of a “dedicated” self-driving taxi will “look futuristic,” Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Thursday.
The company aims to roll out this year its “full self-driving” beta software to all the car fans in North America who have set down as much as $12,000 for the controversial version of its driver assistance system.
Electric car manufacturer Tesla Autopilot players and AI team has done a spectacular work building real-world AI and now the company can go to broad beta for all full self-driving customers in North America this year, Musk said during a speech to a large crowd at the factory on an event to celebrate the grand opening of its factory in Austin.
The mile-long, $1.1 billion company, Tesla’s 6th gigafactory, and the company’s new international headquarters will manufacture not only Model Ys, which are at present Tesla’s most trendy vehicle, but also, starting in 2024, the Semi, the Roadster, and the highly predictable Cybertruck. It will also produce 4680 battery cells. The coming next year, there will be a massive wave of new products,” said Musk.
Full Self Driving or FSD has been available as an option for years. However, Tesla vehicles are not fully self-driving. Tesla vehicles come with Autopilot, a driver assistance system also known as an autonomous driver assistance system, which assists a Tesla to ‘see’ the cars and road around it, and drive itself to a limited degree.
The system is helpful, but still very incomplete. For an additional $12,000, owners can purchase FSD which includes the parking feature Summon as well as navigation on Autopilot, an active supervision system that navigates a car from the main road including interchanges and making lane changes. It is now operational on city streets.
