Nancy Pelosi, House speaker of the US-led congressional delegation in Kyiv. The delegation met Ukraine’s President and will be heading to Poland to have talks with the authorities there.
Pelosi is from California and is a Democrat. She is second in line to be the President after the vice president. She is the senior most US officials to visit Kyiv, since the war began. Her visit marks the US support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.
“Our delegation travelled to Kyiv to send an unmistakable and resounding message to the entire world: America stands firmly with Ukraine. We are here until victory is won.” Ms. Pelosi stated during her visit. Ukraine’s President’s office released footage that showed Pelosi and other US officials in Kyiv. Zelensky and Pelosi thanked each other for the support, as per a video released later.
The American delegation included New York’s George Meeks, a Democratic representative who also chairs the foreign affair committee; Adam Schiff who heads the House intelligence committee; Jim Mcgovern who chairs the House rules committee; Jason Crow; Barbara Lee and Bill Keating.
Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the delegation. Pelosi told him “We believe that we are visiting you to say thank you for your fight for freedom. We are on a frontier of freedom and your fight is a fight for everyone. Our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done.“
The visit by the US delegation wasn’t previously announced to the public. The delegation continued its journey to Poland. Pelosi and her team are to visit Warsaw and meet the Polish president Andrzej Duda. Poland is facing a refugee crisis with more than 3 million people coming to the country since the war began.
“Putin’s brutal war is no longer only a war against the people of Ukraine,” Mr. McGovern commented. “It’s also a war against the world’s most vulnerable. Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world. I don’t think that Putin cares if he starves the world,”
