Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik asked all the ministers in his cabinet to mass resign on Saturday afternoon.
This is a historic revamp in the BJD CM’s five-time governance. All the ministers submitted their resignations to Governor Ganeshi Lal. Assembly Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro also submitted his resignation to Deputy Speaker Rajani Kanta Singh at the same time.
Patro’s resignation indicates his inclusion in Patnaik’s re-shuffled cabinet of ministers. Odisha Assembly might also get their first female BJD speaker. The newly assigned ministers will take their oath on the 5th of June morning (Sunday).
Reasons for Reshuffle
Analysts state that the reshuffle is a reaction to the non-performing constituencies and the controversial ministers. It is expected that the new cabinet will have new faces and representation from all the constituencies. The old ministers who will be dropped from the list will be given organizational roles in the 2024 elections.
A senior BJD leader informed, “Some MLAs have already received calls about their new assignments. They have been asked to remain present in the Capital city of Bhubaneswar.”
Brajrajnagar By-Election
The mass resignation of the Naveen Patnaik’s cabinet happened a day after BJD’s landslide victory in Brajrajnagar By-Polls.
BJD candidate Alaka Mohanty defeated her rival, veteran Congress Leader Kishore Patel, by a vote margin of 66,122. She had stood as the candidate after the untimely death of her husband Kishore Mohanty, who was the previous MLA of Brajrajnagar. This was the reason for the by-elections.

“He won the by-elections in Brajrajnagar by a landslide @bjd_odisha. My greetings to Mrs. Alka Mohanty, the candidate. I would like to thank the people of Brajrajnagar for their unwavering love and dedication to all the workers and brothers and sisters who have made a sincere effort. This victory has further strengthened our commitment to service.” – Translation of the tweet by Naveen Patnaik
Mohanty got 93,953 votes while Patel got 27,831 votes. BJP candidate, Radharani Panda received 22,630 votes. She is the former MLA of the Brajrajnagar constituency. Out of the 2,14,878 voters of the constituency, roughly 1,54,000 voters cast their vote on May 31st.
This win secured 113 seats for BJD in the Odisha Assembly, pushing down BJP to the third position in the state.
