The results of the legislative assembly elections of Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura were declared on March 2, 2024. The BJP retained its stronghold in the northeastern state after securing victories in both Tripura and Nagaland. In Meghalaya, the BJP fought the election alone, but it will enter into a post-poll alliance with the National People’s Party (NPP) in forming the government in the state.
Politics, Election, and Result
Blooming Lotus in the northeastern region, where the BJP had little to no presence before 2014, is a remarkable political success for the BJP. Also, the strong presence of the National Party in the region will ensure the holistic development of the northeastern region, which was disintegrating with the rest of the country.
In the electoral and political context of Northeastern states, the BJP was not a challenger for Congress before 2014. However, with the latest results and tie-ups, the BJP now holds power or at least has a conspicuous presence in six out of seven states. Though the saffron party has yet to make its presence felt in Mizoram, which will go to the polls later this year.
Tripura: Clear Majority for BJP
The BJP vote-share percentage in the Tripura legislative election dropped by 5% compared to the previous election in 2018. However, the BJP crossed the majority mark all by itself by securing 32 seats, three seats short of its previous tally from the 2018 election.
Nagaland: Pre- Poll alliance with NDPP
The National Democratic Progressive Party increased its tally from 18 seats in 2018 to 25 seats out of 60 seats in 2024. The ally of the NDPP won 12 seats, the same as in 2018. In Nagaland, the BJP’s vote share improved to 18.8%.
Meghalaya: Post-poll alliance in making
The National People’s Party became the single-largest party in the state, securing 26 out of the 60 seats. The BJP national president has ordered the state unit of the BJP in Meghalaya to give full support to the NPP in forming a government.
Neither from the heart nor from Delhi.
PM Modi addressed the BJP party worker at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. He said that the attention that the northeastern elections have garnered shows the region is not distant from Dil or Dilli. In revealing the secret of BJP victories in the northeastern state, PM Modi said the secret of BJP victories is the “Triveni” of government, work culture, and service mindset. Taking a jab at Congress, PM Modi accused Congress of neglecting the small states and therefore paying the price of the neglect.
TMC hopes dashed, Congress decline continued
Trinamool Congress is impatient to extend its political footprint beyond the confines of West Bengal to match the national ambition of its party supremo. However, the party faced similar electoral approval to that of Goa.
In Tripura, it contested 28 seats because it was banking on the Bengali population. Tripura was a washout for TMC, with no seats and less than one percent of the vote share. Meghalaya provided some face-saving for TMC. In Meghalaya, TMC contested 56 seats and managed to win over 5 seats with 13 percent of the vote share.
The extraordinary decline of Congress continued in the latest polls. Out of 180 seats that were up for grabs in the three states, Congress managed to win only eight seats. In Nagaland, Congress failed to win any seats. This dismal performance of Congress in the region, which was once dominated by the party, came against the backdrop of the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
