Paleontologists have studied the underground fossils and have recently unearthed a new genus of therizinosauridae dinosaur that used to live during the Cretaceous period in Hokkaido around the north island of Japan.
All About new species found
Researchers from Japan’s Hokkaido University and Southern Methodist University have found that this new species used to live and roam around the Asian region 66 million years ago.
The researchers of the Hokkaido University said that the fossils of this species were first found in Asia in the areas of China and Mongolia, as these countries are rich in fossils. But now fragments of the fossils are being discovered in Japan.
Some Characteristics of this Species
Some of the Remarkable characteristics of this species are that it has sword-like claws which can similarly function just like that of a knife.
Often these claws are referred to as knife-like claws. These dinosaurs belonged to a group of therizinosaurs who are basically bipedal and herbivorous in nature.
They were three-toed dinosaurs that used to live during the Cretaceous period.
Researchers from the university have claimed this is the first fossil of the species of therizinosaurus that has been recovered from the marine sediments of Asia.
This proves that this species was also adapted to the coastal regions.
The first discovery was in 2008.
The fossil was discovered in 2008 by researchers from Japan and the United States Of America. The fossil was covered with marine sediments and it was encased in concentration during its time of recovery.
It looked like a hardened mineral deposit and was basically a hook-shaped fossil that included a partial vertebra, partial wrist, and forefoot.
The collection has been preserved at the Nakagawa Museum of Natural History in Japan. The fossils are now being further studied to know more facts about that particular genus.
