Premier League club Newcastle United has completed the signing of striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad. The deal is a club-record £63m fee signing. Alexander Isak is likely to be available for Newcastle vs Wolves on Sunday.
Newcastle has been aggressive in the transfer markets since their ownership change in January. The latest signing indicates the club’s sporting project is on a good path. Manager Eddie Howe said on Friday morning that he is keen to involve Isak with his other striking option as soon as possible.
“There’s no guarantee with these things, as it’s in other people’s hands, but hopefully,” said Howe. “He will probably need to train with us in the next two days to be available to play….we’re very keen to see him get involved as quickly as possible.”
Callum Wilson, another Newcastle striker is currently out for a few weeks due to a hamstring injury. Eddie Howe said Wilson’s injury isn’t severe and he expects him back after a few weeks. But his injury played a role in the signing of Isak.
“We are hopeful Callum will only be out for a couple of weeks,” said Eddie. “I think we reacted slightly off that, we were always looking for an attacking player but it changed our focus slightly on the type. But we’re delighted to hopefully sign Alex.”
Alexander Isak player profile
Alexander Isak is a tall striker with plenty of pace to outrun defenders. In his 132 appearances for Real Sociedad, he scored 44 goals and assisted in 8 goals. The Sweden international signed for Real Sociedad in 2019 from Bor. Dortmund. He won the Copa del Rey in 2019-20 with Sociedad scoring 7 goals in the competition.
In his first season at the club, he scored 16 goals and assisted 3 goals in 45 appearances. He scored against teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid that season. Last season however he only scored 10 goals in a total of 41 appearances.
22-year-old Alexander Isak is young but with a high-quality playing experience in La Liga. His best years are ahead of him and even if the price tag seems high, he would play a significant role in a club on the rise.
