The NIRF Ranking for the year 2024 has been released by Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education and External Affairs, with IIT Madras bagging first place in the overall best institution category.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, which ranks India’s educational institutions based on a set of parameters, was released by Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, the Minister of State for Education and External Affairs on Monday, 11:00 am. The rankings were announced in various categories during a press conference.
In the overall rankings, IIT Madras has maintained its top position. The esteemed Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bengaluru has secured the second position.
In the category of top universities, IISC Bengaluru has secured the first position, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi.
Just as in the previous five consecutive years, IIT Madras has once again sustained its position as the top-ranked college in the overall category. Additionally, it has also secured the first position as the best engineering institute for the eighth consecutive year. This consistent achievement reflects the continued excellence and reputation of IIT Madras in the field of education.
NIRF RANKING
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) officially approved the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on September 29th, 2015. The launch ceremony was led by the Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development.’
 Since its launch, the NIRF has played a significant role in assessing and ranking educational institutions in India, serving as a valuable tool for evaluating performance and promoting excellence in higher education.
This framework serves as a guideline for ranking educational institutions across the country. It incorporates a methodology that is based on comprehensive recommendations and a broad understanding developed by a Core Committee established by the MHRD. The purpose of this committee was to identify the key parameters for assessing and ranking universities and institutions.
These parameters encompass essential aspects such as “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.” The NIRF methodology utilizes these parameters to evaluate and rank the institutions effectively.
Over the past eight years, the India Rankings have seen several improvements in data collection formats, metrics, and comparison methodologies, further enhancing their accuracy and reliability.
Top Educational Institutions
This year, a comprehensive total of 13 categories have been released in the India Rankings. These lists encompass the ranking of higher education institutes across various sub-categories.
The sub-categories include top universities, top colleges, and section-wise lists of the best engineering, medical, law, management colleges, pharma colleges, architecture, and others. These specific rankings provide valuable insights into the performance and standing of institutions within their respective fields of specialization.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia grabbed the second and third positions, respectively in University ranking after IISc Bangalore which has also been ranked second in the overall category. These consistent rankings showcase these institutions’ continued excellence and performance in their respective categories.
In the engineering category, the IITs have maintained a strong presence, occupying most of the top 10 positions. The order is as follows: IIT Madras at first position followed by IIT Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Hyderabad You can access the rankings on nirfindia.org.Â
In the ‘Agriculture and Allied Sector’ category, the Indian Agriculture Research Institute in New Delhi has secured the first position. The National Dairy Institute in Karnal has achieved the second rank, while the Punjab Agriculture University in Ludhiana has attained the third position.
In the field of law, the National Law University in Bengaluru has topped the list, securing the first position. The National Law University in Delhi closely follows in the second rank. Securing the third position is NALSAR University of Law, located in Hyderabad. These rankings highlight the excellence and performance of these institutions in their respective fields
In college Rankings, Miranda House has once again topped the list followed by Hindu College, Presidency College, PSGR Krishnammal College, and St. Xavier’s College in the top five, with Lady Shri Ram College and Shri Ram College of Commerce bagging 9th and 11th rank respectively.
