Nord Stream 2 is the new export gas pipeline running from Russia to Europe across the Baltic Sea. The route covers over 1,200 kilometers, and the project is under Gazprom, the Russian state-owned energy corporation.
The pipeline project is regardedย as the possible answer for the EU’s increasing gas prices. Butย the project could cost them inย other aspects according to the USA and other European countries.
Nord Streamย 2 comes after theย successful runningย of theย Nordย Stream gasย pipeline.ย
Likeย theย one inย operation,ย the new pipelineย willย establish aย directย linkย between Gazprom andย theย European consumers, ensuring aย highly reliable supplyย ofย Russian gas toย Europe.
Theย combined designย capacityย ofย Nord Stream and Nordย Stream 2 willย beย in theย rangeย ofย 110 billionย cubic meters of gasย per year, which could play a significant roleย inย the European market that is now facing a severe shortage ofย gas.

Gazprom behind the rise of gas prices in the European Union?ย
According to various media reports, gas prices across Europe increased atย aย veryย high percentageย in the past year, mainly due to the increasing demandย for energy and the limited supply.
It is expected that the coming winter in Europe mightย hit hard on people if the price for the gas does not lower and the availability is made possibleย as per the demands.
Russia is the supplier of about 37% of the natural gas exported to the European Union.ย Theย Russian majority state-ownedย Gazprom PJSC is Europe’sย biggest gas supplier.
Different Europeanย lawmakers have askedย the EUย to launch an investigation on Gazprom,ย insisting that they are intentionally withholding the supply of gasย to Europe as aย means to get Germany to expediteย its Nord Streamย 2 project.
Putin commented on the accusations over Gazprom as follows, “Russia has always been a reliable gas supplier to consumersย around the world, in Europe andย Asia, and always has fullyย met all its obligations.”ย He said that state-controlledย gasย giant Gazprom has unfailingly met consumer demands for more gas asย envisaged under existing supply contracts.ย

EU and Germanyย forcedย toย expedite Nordย Stream 2?ย ย
Europe’s gas prices rose to a record of more than 116 euros per megawatt-hour ($134 per MWh) on Tuesday, more than six times the price at the start of the year.
Followingย Putin’sย remarks on the possibility ofย sellingย more gas to Europe through spotย buyersย via itsย domesticย market,ย the prices cameย down toย 104.52 euros perย megawatt-hourย ($120.79)ย on Thursday, which is still veryย high.
The pipeline, which runs from Russia under the Baltic Sea and into Germany,ย awaiting clearance from German authorities,ย was completed last monthย amidst the disapproval from many countries,ย including the United States.
Theย USย cautioned that ifย the project gets sanctioned, it will give Moscow more influence over the European Union. And if that happens, it will be a challengeย for the US,ย so they are critical of the project and demands that it shouldย not be allowed.
Russia, whichย states thatย they areย open toย supplyingย more energy if appropriateย bids arrive,ย forcesย theย EU, especially Germany,ย to acceptย its pipelineย project. The possibility ofย expediting this projectย can help inย gas prices, which are now skyrocketing in the EU, to be reduced and put under control.
ย ย
The Unitedย Statesย andย otherย European countriesย haveย accused thatย theย pipelineย is aย geopoliticalย projectย to increaseย Europe’sย dependency on Russianย gas.
ย
Germany’s government seems to be in favor of the pipeline project angering its fellow European countries. Looking from Germany’s perspective, the project will increase gas availability in Germany’s fully liberalized market, reducing prices.
The pipeline allows Gazprom to supply Germany, its largest market directly, and reduce transit risks.
If the pipeline projects get approved by Germany, it will make Germany a central hub for Russian gas supplies in Europe and enhance competition in the European gas market. ย
