Due to high heatwaves, the government of Odisha has decided to shut down schools and colleges for five days. The summer is draining all the people of Odisha as it reaches 40 °C in 26 places. Balangir, located in the western region of Odisha, recorded the highest degree of Celsius, at 44 C. The capital of Odisha, Bhubaneshwar, recorded 43.3 C.

Leave Announcement

Even though the state of Odisha expected the temperature to be under 38 C, the temperature went really high, over 40 C. The School and Mass Education Department (S&ME) announced, “Government, after careful consideration, has been pleased to suspend the classes of all educational institutions under the S&ME Department, i.e., government, government-aided, and privately managed (Odia & English medium) from 26.04.2022 to 30.04.2022 (except for the examination which has already been scheduled by BSE & CHSE).”

The parents and guardians of students also showed their support for the holidays, as it is very hard for both the children and their parents to leave the shelter after 10:00 am. The government has already announced that the vacations will start on June 1st. The parents are urging the government to advance the vacation period due to the prevailing increase in temperature.

The government’s measures to ensure proper education

The S&ME Department has stated, “The summer vacation will be curtailed and allowed for a brief period, i.e., from June 6th to June 16th, 2022.” Due to the corona pandemic, the students got to spend almost two years of their academic year taking online classes. Additionally, the teachers are under the urge to complete the given portions and syllabus within a limited time, and the students also need to catch up to the speed. So, the government made sure to give the proper education to the students by implementing a plan named the Learning Recovery Plan (OSLRP).

Meanwhile, the government made sure to conduct exams for the board exams. The tenth graders’ exams will be starting from April 29th, 2022 until May 6th, 2022. The summer days are also a disturbance to the board exam students.
