On Sunday, P.V Sindhu beat Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the Women’s Singles final to win her first Swiss Open title.
In the Women’s Singles final on Sunday, Pursarla V Sindhu easily secured victory over her Thai opponent Busanan Ongbamrungphan in a two set match (21-16, 21-8). The two-time Olympic medallist Indian and the Thai had met head-to-head a total of 17 times now with Sindhu securing 16 wins against her. Busanan had won only once in the Korean Open in 2019.
On Sunday, Sindhu bested Busanan in a 49 minute match in her second consecutive final in the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament. Last time, Pusarla had lost to the Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain. The Swiss Open title is the second title Sindhu won this year. In January this year, she had won the Syed Modi International Super 300 tournament in Lucknow.
In the opening set, Sindhu took a 3-0 lead but Busanan soon came back with good shots equalising the score at 7-7. Busanan planned to keep Sindhu away from the net to make her cover distance across the court. But her strategy could not work successfully due to her errors in finishing and Sindhu went into break with a two-point lead.
Busanan opted for drop shots in the second half of the first game. After a 13-13 equal, Sindhu maintained her lead and had secured four game points. She clinched the first set at 21-16 when the Thai played wide. From the beginning of the second set, the 26-year old Indian maintained lead over Busanan at 5-0. At the interval, Sindhu had a nine point advantage over the Thai.
Sindhu’s prowess continued through out the second set with her precise and accurate play whereas Busanan struggled to secure points for herself. The Indian took a huge lead of 16 match points when Ongbamrungphan managed to take four consecutive points. The match ended with P.V Sindhu comfortably winning at 21-8.
