The new session of Parliament begins on September 18, 2024. The session will be inaugurated with Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar hoisting the national flag at the new parliamentary building. The inauguration of the session in the parliamentary building indicates the Parliament finding its new abode. An all-party meeting for floor leaders of different parties was organised on the 17th of September. The session will begin with the Samvidhan Sabha, the 75-year-old journey of the parliament . A bulletin was issued that mentioned the agenda and the of the parliamentary meeting. The 24 parties of the Indian Bloc have agreed to participate in the special session of the Parliament.
History of Special and Parliamentary Sessions
The Indian Parliament is a council of the Government of India. It comprises two bodies, The Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. The leader of the Parliament is the President of India. He has the power to start, conduct and end a Parliamentary Session. In 1861, the legislative branch of India was the Imperial Legislative Council. After independence, the constitution came into force. In 1950, the constituent assembly had dissolved. The Old Parliament House is called the Sansad Bhavan in New Delhi. The first Parliamentary session was a unique session held on August 15 to mark independence. There have been eight special sessions of the Parliament till now. - 1992: A session on the 50th anniversary of the Quit India Movement.
- 1997: Parliament convened to celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence.
- 1962: The agenda was the India-China war situation.
- 1972: A session to celebrate 25 years of India’s independence.
- 2015: A special session remembering Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary.
- 2017: A session to mark the discussion of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The session was earlier, described as a special session, but the government later notified that it is a regular session.
The Agenda of the meeting
The agenda and discussion for the special session is the evolution of India’s Parliamentary democracy. A total of Eight bills are listed. The bills that are taken for consideration are, The Advocates Bill [2023], The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, [2023], The Post Office Bill,2023]and the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Bill [2023] listed. A bill for Senior Citizens and three bills for the scheduled caste was later added. The term and the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are to be for consideration.

Though there is no official announcement for a new bill, many parties have requested for revival of the Women’s Reservation bill.The Party Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, has written to the Prime Minister to discuss several pertinent issues and the current economic condition of India. The Congress has insisted on the passing of The Women’s Reservation Bill.In addition to these proceedings, a discussion on Monday is held surrounding the various achievements, memories and learnings of the Parliamentary journey of the past 75 years.
