An overview
In the Supreme Court, a writ petition was tabled, praying for some guidelines which will instruct the State Boards, CBSE, ICSE, NIOS for conducting the board exams for 10th and 12th in offline platforms and thereby to pass a notification for an alternative way out instead of conducting online examination. Â
It was alleged therein that the State Boards have become a silent statute on the current scenario and have been reluctant to take the timely and essential initiative in respect of conducting examinations and declaration of the final results for their respective programs of students (i.e.,, class X and XII).Â
Case Title: Anubha Shrivastava Sahai v. Union of India and OthersÂ
Court petitionÂ
Anubha Shrivastava Sahai, a child rights activist, requested for conducting an improvement exam for those students who are not satisfied with the marks given in internal assessment by their respective institutions, has also been sought. In the writ petition, which is filled, the petitioner made all the State Boards, CBSE, ICSE, and NIOS respondents in it.Â
Sahai seeks for the constitution of a committee for deciding the methods and modes of assessment of students, including compartment students and announcement of the results within a stipulated time.Â
The petitioner not only seeks assistance from the courts but also prayed for directing UGC to constitute a committee to decide and declare the date for admission into various Universities for the students passing out and a formula for assessment of Class XII students who want to pursue their higher studies in professional and non-professional courses by introducing and inducting an aptitude test and qualitative assessment or an alternative method of assessment within the ceiling period.Â
Key HighlightsÂ
- On seeking to ‘Cancel Board Exams 2022’ on social media platforms, students have now knocked the doors of the Supreme Court.Â
- A plea has been filed in Supreme Court, praying for an alternative way of assessment from CBSE, CISCE, NIOS, and State Boards, for classes 10 and 12.Â
In the said case, students are not only seeking an alternative way of examination in place of offline Board Exams 2022 but are also seeking assistance and relief regarding the formulation of an improvement exam later. This has been prayed for those pupils who will not be satisfied with the evaluation of internal assessments by their respective institutions. This process of evaluation was also included by most of the Boards in the 2020-21 exams.Â
A silver liningÂ
Decently, the plea highlights the pandemic position, the difficulties, and adverse issues faced by students due to interruptions in their studies.Â
Education is not only the prime concern, but also the lives and mental health of children are important too. The lives of teachers, staff, and parents of the children are also crucial, who will have to venture out if the offline mode is prevalent.Â
The plea, apart from seeking insurance and instruction for not conducting the exam via physical mode, but also humbly put forth before the SC for a direction to the University Grants Commission to formulate and constitute a committee to declare the date for admission into various professional and non-professional programs and Universities and to work out an equation for the assessment of Class XII students who want to pursue their higher studies in non-professional courses.Â
