On July 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate the fresh integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. The state-of-the-art terminal, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹710 crore, aims to enhance connectivity infrastructure and boost air traffic, ultimately supporting tourism and economic growth in the region. The project showcases a strong emphasis on sustainability, with features designed to minimize the negative impact on the islands’ environment.
Enhancing Connectivity and Tourism
The new integrated terminal building at Port Blair’s airport is a significant step towards improving connectivity in the region.
The terminal’s total constructed space spans roughly 40,800 square meters, enabling it to accommodate approximately 50 lakhs (5 million) passengers each year. This expansion is expected to increase air traffic and facilitate smoother travel experiences for both domestic and international visitors.
Port Blair is a gateway to the picturesque islands of Andaman and Nicobar, attracting numerous tourists throughout the year. The spacious terminal building is set to enhance tourism by providing better facilities and services to travellers. Additionally, the boost in air traffic is anticipated to create enhanced employment opportunities for the local community, further contributing to the economic growth of the region.
Sustainable Design and Features
The new terminal building stands as a testament to sustainability, both in its design and operational features. Its architectural design resembles a shell, reflecting the sea and islands, and aims to blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings. The incorporation of sustainable features ensures minimal negative impact on the island’s fragile environment.
To reduce heat gain, the terminal features a double-insulated roofing system. Skylights allow abundant natural sunlight during the day, reducing the need for artificial lighting. Energy-efficient LED lighting and low heat gain glazing further contribute to energy conservation.
Water conservation measures include rainwater catchment in an underground water tank, which aids in reusing the collected water for landscaping purposes. The terminal also houses an on-site sewage treatment plant that treats wastewater to a high standard, ensuring 100% reuse for landscaping needs. Additionally, a 500 KW capacity solar power plant has been installed, harnessing the abundant sunlight available in the region.
Infrastructure Expansion
In addition to the terminal building, a designated apron capable of accommodating two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 airplanes has been erected at Port Blair Airport. This development, costing ₹80 crore, has increased the airport’s parking capacity to accommodate ten aircraft at a time. The expanded infrastructure supports the growing demand for air travel in the region and improves operational efficiency.
Inauguration via Video Conferencing by PM Modi
The newly constructed integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport will be officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The virtual inauguration highlights the government’s commitment to utilizing technology for remote interactions and promoting contactless operations, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
