The pope pleaded for peace in Ukraine in his address on the Easter day at St Peter’s Square when a crowd gathered for the first time since the pandemic to celebrate Easter.
On Sunday as Christians all over the world celebrated Easter, the Pope made a plea for peace in Ukraine. He called the war in Ukraine and parts of the war senseless and talked about how there exists the troubling possibility of nuclear warfare. The pope said “May there be peace for war-torn Ukraine, so sorely tried by the violence and destruction of this cruel and senseless war into which it was dragged,” as he addressed the gathering from the balcony of St Peter square. It was the first time since the pandemic that St Peters Square had an Easter celebration packed with people. Around 50,000 people had gathered for the occasion and they applauded when the pope talked about having peace in Ukraine.
Archbishop and Pope wish for peace
“Please, please, let us not get used to war, ” the pope pleaded while talking about the war. He asked to stop the unnecessary show of power while the people of the countries are suffering. However, the pope did not indulge in direct name-calling of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who started the attack on 24 February. He made references to the war in his address to the people. “May the conflict in Europe also make us more concerned about other situations of conflict, suffering and sorrow, situations that affect all too many areas of our world, situations that we cannot overlook and do not want to forget” the pope added while referring to the war.
The pope talked about various wars around the world including the ones in the Middle East and wished for peace around the world.
The Archbishop of Canterbury also talked about attaining peace in Ukraine. He argued for a ceasefire to be declared by the Russian President. The archbishop, who usually stays away from talking about politics, criticized the British government in his address. The criticism was for the government’s policy to send back refugees from Rwanda back to their country. He declared the policy was against the wishes of God.
