Possible Jharkhand CM Contender If Hemant Goes

After the BJP’s complaint against Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren over a mining contract, the Election Commission has given their recommendations to the Governor.

The strictest possible punishment is not that Hemant Soren be disqualified as an MLA but that he be debarred from contesting elections for up to five years besides being disqualified as MLA.

Hemant Soren has been accused of assigning a govt mining contract to himself while in office as Jharkhand CM.

The announcement of the Governor’s verdict could come at any time soon.

If Hemant goes, there are not many possibilities of someone else occupying the CM chair but another Soren.

Hemant Soren is the younger son of Shibu Soren who is the founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and led the bifurcation movement of Jharkhand from Bihar.

Shibu Soren has been CM of Jharkhand thrice and a union minister. He then became a member of Rajya Sabha and took on more of a mentor role to his sons.

The eldest son Durga Soren was earlier seen to be a natural heir and was groomed as well.

Hemant was always interested in politics since the days of the Morcha but remained in the queue.

Durga Soren died at the age of 40 due to a brain stroke. It was then that Hemant Soren had to be ready to take command. They have a sister too who is married in Odisha and active in Odisha politics.

But Sita Soren, widow of Durga Soren kept his assembly seat and has been in line for years now waiting for a bigger role.

Possible Jharkhand CM contender

There are enough contenders in the Soren family itself. Shibu Soren, former Jharkhand CM who is now 78, could return as he is still the party supremo and a tall figure in the state.

Shibu’s youngest son Basant who is an MLA from his father’s former assembly seat Dumka is also a contender only he is also in the radar of Election Commission.

Kalpana Soren who is the wife of Hemant Soren has been trying to get into politics but still in a behind-the-scenes kind of role. Her getting the Jharkhand CM chair is far-fetched.
