On Monday, 28th March 2022, Pramod Sawant, the face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa, took as Chief Minister for the second consecutive term. After winning 20 seats out of 40 seats in the recently concluded Goa Assembly elections, the BJP frontman in Goa was sworn in as CM at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Taleigao in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. This is the first time that the CM took oath outside Raj Bhavan.

Other BJP delegates and Union Ministers also attended the event amounting to around 1,000 attendees at the swearing-in ceremony. The ceremony was broadcasted by various news channels across the coastal state and was telecasted on online news channels also. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, Haryana CM Khattar and Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai also attended the oath-taking ceremony.

As quoted by News18, state BJP chief, Sadanand Shet Tanavade said that the people wearing black masks and black dresses would not be allowed inside the swearing-in ceremony venue. Ahead of the oath-taking event, around 2000 police personnel were deployed in the coastal state of Goa. From the news report published by News18, Goa DGP Indradev Shukla said that the railway stations, bus stands and hotels were under strict surveillance in the event of the ceremony.
Cabinet Ministers:
Remaining silent until Sunday, 27th March, over the number of other cabinet ministers to swear-in, in at Raj Bhavan on Monday, Sawant handed over the order for appointing a council of ministers to the Governor of Goa, P S Sreedharan Pillai. Eight MLAs from BJP, Vishwajeet Rane, Rohan Khaunte, Atanasio Monserrate, Mauvin Godinho, Ravi Naik, Govind Gaude, Nilesh Cabral and Subhash Shirodkar took oath as cabinet ministers Today.
Speaker’s post:
From the India Today news report, the Governor has summoned a two-day session of the new Assembly during which Sawant would have to seek a vote of confidence. The session would commence on 29th March 2022. During the session, a new speaker would be elected.
Therefore, on Sunday, March 27, for the speaker’s post, the BJP MLA from Canacona, Ramesh Tawadkar filed his nomination. While the congress-led opposition nominated Aleixo Sequeira. Meanwhile, the passing of bills and a vote-on-account, which means an activity to deal with short-term expenditures needs of the Government, would happen during the assembly session.
Winning in 20 constituencies, further three independent MLAs and two legislators of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) extended their support to the BJP making them a majority.
Soon after taking the oath, Sawant said that the main focus of this second tenure of their government would be on employment generation, tourism and restarting mining activities in Goa.
Who is Sawant?
Pramod Sawant, an Ayurveda Medical Practitioner turned politician, became Goa’s CM for the second time. This 48-year-old began his political career with BJP in 2008 while having Manohar Parrikar as his best mentor and protégé. Being a three-time MLA, under the leadership of Manohar Parrikar when BJP formed the government in 2017, Sawant was elected as a Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly.
After Parrikar’s death, in March 2019, making history, this Three-time MLA for the first time sworn in as the chief minister of Goa. Capturing the post of CM for his second tenure, Pramod Sawant resembles the best hope for BJP in Goa after the fabled Manohar Parrikar.Â
