On Thursday, 31st March 2022, in Irkichedu village of Jogulamba Gadwal, Telangana during the installation of Dr B.R. Ambedkar statue, opposing to the installation of Ambedkar statue at the place, two groups clashed with each other. The quarrel happened in the centre of the village.
The Kalur Thimma Doddi Police resorted to the lathi charge as some miscreants threw stones and made the clash violent. Even in the presence of police, they set fire to the state and tried to damage it.
Gadwal DSP N. Ranga Swamy, according to the Deccan Chronicle report, said that the clash took place since one group insisted to install the statue on the school premises. But when the statue was installed in the centre of the village, the other group argued not to install the statue near the place of worship. Hence, the quarrel took place.
In 2015, the gram panchayat consented to install the statue in any of the three places that are the selected school premises, the centre and another place in the village. The SI suffered some mild burn injuries during the conflict.
“What is wrong in erecting a statue of Ambedkar who fought for us? We tried convincing them, but they won’t budge,” he added.
“Members of the Goud community who are in the Telangana Rashtra Samiti are giving silly reasons for objecting the installation. They earlier claimed that the statue would eat into the space meant for installing the statue of Ganesh, and now they are claiming that they want to erect a statue for Bharat Mata in the same spot,” Kurumurthy alleged.
On Monday, Dalit activists and lawyers from Hyderabad went to Jadcherla to show the solidarity and seek the permission from the Municipal Commissioner to erect the statue.
