Ratna Pathak Shah opens up about her life in the film industry in the earlier times, and how comedy films saved her.
One of the most brilliant actors of the time who has outdone herself every time, Ratna Pathak Shah. She has contributed to the film industry and entertained the masses with her acting and choice of films that she takes up. Even today, she has managed to entertain the audience with her perfectionism.
The Bollywood actor sparks light on an important discussion about the industry in a recent interview. She reminiscences the difficult times of the industry and how toxic the star culture was when she was growing up as an actor back in the 1970s.
Ratna’s experience in working with other stars and husband
She shares her experience as well, that how the deals got finalized in front of her with her husband, Naseeruddin Shah, whilst people pretended Pathak to be unrecognized. She also thinks that part of it was her own fault because of the fact that maybe she didn’t communicate with them that well.
Talking about the “ugliness of the star system”, the actor opened up about how the movies went according to the stars. The content of the story and the strength it had in them didn’t work at that time, the movies went on the basis of the popularity of the stars or actors.
Ratna Pathak also mentioned that when she was growing up in the 70s, the stars were poor performers, and she felt disconnected from their attitude.
The actor also revealed that she would like to work with her husband. Although they tried many times, and they got offers as well to act together but either the script didn’t work or it was a financing issue.
Finding venues to present slightly offbeat films is becoming more and more challenging according to the actor.
Taking up comedy roles saved Ratna Pathak’s life
Ratna further reveals that she realized that acting was more about crying or being angry all the time in the movie.
The actor explored herself as a comedic actor and she knew and was pretty sure that she isn’t an actor who will cry or shout loudly all the time in the movies. And that’s when she started associating herself with more comedy films and identified as an actor who could play any role given to her.

The actor says, “What did poor Shabana (Azmi) and Smita (Patil) do? All the while, they were either crying or angry. The film’s creators and writers were looking at things in a stereotypical way. They (women) had no right to be content or to experience any kind of trauma. Those are the stories that get picked up.”
Well, we pretty much agree with what Ratna Pathak says as it gave her the liberty to make her decisions and got discovered in a genre at a time which was not much popularized amongst actresses.
She enjoyed her success with different genres as well, and maintained to deliver exemplary performances to the audience.
On the professional front, Ratna Pathak’s upcoming release Dhak Dhak, which stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanjana Sanghi, and Dia Mirza will soon be commenced. As of now, there is no release date announced.
