Director Karan Johar’s upcoming movie ‘Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani’ is set to hit the box office tomorrow i.e. on July 28. The movie stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead along with Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, Saswata Chatterjee and many more. The trailer of the movie was released on July 4, and the huge star cast along with the cinematography and every other little detail tells us that the movie is going to be the next Dharma Production Blockbuster!
The trailer shows that Ranveer Singh (known as ‘Rocky’ in the film) mistakenly refers to Rabindranath Tagore as ‘Dadaji’. Now the question was if the Bengali audience will take this scene as an offence. Well, Churni Ganguly shared her thoughts on this.
Churni Ganguly’s thoughts on this Rabindranath’s reference
Churni Ganguly in the movie is seen playing the role of Alia Bhatt’s (known as ‘Rani’ in the film) mother. It is shown in the trailer of the movie that ‘Rani Chatterjee’ comes from a Bengali quintessential family where a picture of Rabindranath Tagore is displayed on the walls. Ranveer Singh (playing the role of ‘Rocky Randhawa’ in the film), on the other hand, is shown as a loud, energetic Punjabi guy who mistakenly greets the picture of Rabindranath Tagore as ‘Dadaji’.
This scene has raised a question among some Bengali audiences regarding the disrespect of Rabindranath Tagore. Though Churni Ganguly has waved off such intentions by the director Karan Johar. In an interview with News18 she stated that Rabindranath Tagore is an emotion to Bengalis and a picture of him can be found in every Bengali household. However, people who are not aware of the Bengali culture, history or society can easily mistake him for being a part of their family like a ‘grandfather’.
She also elaborated that she doesn’t consider this scene of Rocky referring to Rabindranath Tagore as Rani’s grandfather an offence since it is coming from a non-Bengali guy who doesn’t have much knowledge about Bengal. Hence she feels that no offence is intended in that particular scene and no offence must be taken as well. Rather, according to her opinion, this scene worked out well to showcase the character of Ranveer Singh (as ‘Rocky Randhawa’ in the film”).
She further explained how the director Karan Johar tried to portray Alia Bhatt’s character in the movie. She said that Bengali women love sarees and they would never wear lehenga or any other outfit, be it a wedding or a function or any other occasion, Bengali women will stick to their sarees just as Alia Bhatt is seen in the movie.
Recently, The Central Board of Film Certification granted RRKPK a U/A certificate after a few cuts. The board asked for a certain scene about Lok Sabha to be removed along with the word ‘Khela hobe’ which was West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee’s political party TMC’s slogan for 2021.
About Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani
The film, directed by Karan Johar, and produced by Dharma Productions and Viacom 18, is about love between Rocky Randhawa (played by Ranveer Singh) and Rani Chatterjee (played by Alia Bhatt) and their completely different cultural background. This movie, like ‘2 States’, is about the backdrop of marriage between two completely different cultures and their reaction to inter-caste ‘Punjabi-Bengali’ marriage. The film shows that after facing family conflict, Rocky and Rani decided to live with each other’s family for three months to see if they can survive and convince each other’s parents for their marriage.
The movie had a special screening last night in Mumbai which was attended by a huge number of B-Town stars like Ranveer, Alia, Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal, Abhishek Bachchan, Gauri Khan and many more. The war between the Randhawans and the Chatterjees is set to hit the screens on July 28.
