India faces a diplomatic dilemma
India has been in a tough spot and diplomatic dilemma over the Russia-Ukraine stance. India expressed regret over the situation and said that the situation in Ukraine is “in danger of spiraling into a major crisis.”Ā
At an emergency meeting at UN Security Council, India said, “The Security Council had met two days ago and discussed the situation. We had called for urgent de-escalation of tensions and emphasized on sustained and focused diplomacy to address all issues concerning the situation.”Ā
“However, we note with regret that the calls of the international community to give time to the recent initiatives undertaken by the parties to diffuse tensions were not heeded to. The situation is in danger of spiraling into a major crisis.
We express our deep concern over the developments, which if not handled carefully, may well undermine the peace and security of the region,” said India’s permanent representative at the UN, TS Tirumurti.Ā
India has been facing diplomatic dilemma due to numerous reasons:Ā
- While India raises the issue of “territorial integrity and sovereignty” regarding China, the West considers the statement given at the UN as deliberately ignoring Russia’s actions and showing double standards.Ā Ā
- Ā The statement given by India’s representative at the UN is the closest New Delhi has gone so far as to caution Russia not to undertake risky behavior which may escalate. It is a diplomatese for India to tell Russia ā don’t do it!Ā
- While the Indian Embassy is trying to facilitate the return of all Indian nationals from Ukraine, it has also expressed concerns about the security and safety of the civilians.Ā
- Ā It is a test for India’s efforts to intensify diplomatic relations, where it does not blame any of the sides for being uncooperative. At the same time, the West has blamed Russia for stirring the tension, whereas the Russian President has blamed NATO’s eastward expansion as a threat.Ā
Furthermore, the Indian diplomat said, “We call on all parties to exert greater efforts to bridge divergent interests. I would like to underline that the legitimate security interests of all parties should be fully taken into account. We believe that the solution lies in sustained diplomatic dialogue between the concerned party.”Ā
It is a debate within the Indian establishment about preferring principles and values on one hand or pragmatism and interests on the other hand. India has a relatively tough strategic choice to make ahead.Ā
