Rekha turned 67 on Sunday. Kangana Ranaut wished her a happy birthday. “My godmother,” the Thalaivii actor called the veteran actor. On occasion, Kangana shared a throwback picture with Rekha on Instagram Stories.
A throwback picture is of Kangana and Rekha, who posed for photographs at Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s wedding reception. Despite Kangana calling Rekha her ‘Godmother’, Rekha also said she would have raised her daughter to be like Kangana if she had a daughter.
After Kangana presented Rekha with a special award at the event, Rekha showered Kangana with praise in her acceptance speech. The actress called her real-life Jhansi ki Rani even before Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi was released. However, Kangana revealed that the black silk sari she was wearing was a gift from Rekha, who was dressed in red.Â
A few years ago, Kangana’s sister Rangoli revealed to a magazine that the actor is a ‘wannabe’ Rekha. Rangoli had tweeted on Rekha’s birthday in 2019, “I will expose Kangana, she is wannabe Rekha, check out these pics and then decide.” Her Twitter account has since been inactive.Â
In celebration of Rekha’s birthday, we remember how Rakesh Roshan’s Khoon Bhari Maang’s crocodile scene is engraved in our millennial minds. The movie ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’ depicts Rekha as a woman of grace, beauty and timeless elegance. Rekha gets a makeover in Khoon Bhari Maang and becomes unbelievably stunning.
If your eyes aren’t enough to visually confirm that she looks great now, all the characters in the film say some awkward dialogue is affirming this. In particular, Shatrughan Sinha’s JD says “Ooh la la” in an unintentionally hilarious way.
Gen Z Should Not Miss This Masterpiece
1. An underdog champion wins in this classic story of good over evil. We love it!
The film Khoon Bhari Maang excelled in the common good vs evil storyline of the 1980s. The film was based on the Australian mini-series Return to Eden, which tells the story of a wealthy widow Aarti Saxena (Rekha), manipulated by her second husband and left to die.
Although she survives, Jyoti Verma, an alter ego of hers, serves the perfect revenge.
2. Before feminist heroes were a thing, this showed us a feminist hero
It is a fact that Aarti, who became Jyoti, fought for her rights as a feminist. And she did so in style. Among the first films that demonstrated that women could wear high heels and kick ass! Both avatars portrayed her as a fierce feminist. It is the story of Aarti – who took control and fought back, and Jyoti – who learned to use fashion and feminity as tools.Â
3. Sure, the action sequences were great, but the theatrics scored well. The lead actress was fantastic! Was it ahead of its time? Absolutely!
Bollywood loves its male action heroes when it comes to thrillers. Yet, despite this stereotype, Rekha played the female role as Aarti/Jyoti, who rode a horse, chased villains on horseback and brandished a gun. Despite being three decades old, the action sequences, the CGI effects, and the make-up effects still captivate.
4. It demonstrated why animals deserve special recognition
Almost nobody recognizes Aarti after she transforms into Jyoti, whether her ex-husband, ex-best friend or even her children. However, her beloved dogs and horses are still in their regular places, and animals don’t care what humans look like.
5. Plastic surgery is far more realistic than that offered by many K-dramas (the saas-bahu kind, not the Korean style)
Khoon Bhari Maang, however, was more authentic in how it depicted the change in casting than most Hindi TV dramas.Â
6. Crocodiles!
Man-eating crocodiles certainly deserve their mention if there is one character worth mentioning. Aarti’s disfigurement was a scene stealer, but Sanjay’s revenge didn’t disappoint either!
