The SC convicted Navjot Singh Sindhu to 1-year jail in a 1988 road rage case in which the victim (Gurnam Singh) died. While hearing a review petition filed by the victim’s family on the matter of Sidhu’s conviction, a Supreme Court bench led by Justices AM Khanwilkar and SK Kaul expanded the extent of punishment.
In the 1988 road accident case, Sidhu was initially released after paying a nominal penalty, but the case was reopened after a review petition filed by Gurnam Singh’s family. The supreme court today convicted Sidhu of one year of solitary confinement.
After an SC’s decision Navjot Singh Sindhu Tweeted that he “will submit to the majesty of the law.”
Prehistory of road rage case;
The incident occurred in 1988 near Patiala’s Sheranwala Gate, Sidhu’s hometown. Gurnam, 65, was allegedly beaten up by Navjot Singh Sidhu, who then fled from the crime scene. Gurnam was rushed to the hospital and declared dead. Read the whole story;
- 1988: On 27 December 1988, near Patiala’s Sheranwala Gate Navjot Sidhu and co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu aka Bunny were in a Gypsy when they got into an argument with Gurnam Singh, Police said that Sindhu beat Gurnam Singh when he asked them to give him a way, later Sindhu escaped the spot and Gurnam died when he transferred to the hospital.
- 1999:Â In September 1999, Trial Court freed Navjot Singh Sindhu and Bunny.
- 2006: The Punjab and Haryana High Court finds Sidhu and Bunny guilty of attempted murder but not murder and sentenced them to three years in prison.
- 2007: Sidhu and Bunny appeal to the Supreme Court, which upholds the high court decision and holds the conviction pending appeal.
- 2018: The Supreme Court finds Sidhu guilty of intentionally harming Gurnam, reversing Punjab and Haryana high court decision. On 15th May 2018, SC Acquits him of murder charges and fined him ₹1000 under section 323 of IPC.
- 2018: Gurnam’s family files a review petition in Supreme Court and SC accept the petition in September 2018
- 2022:Â On 19 May 2022 The Supreme Court convicted Navjot Singh Sindhu and sentenced 1-year imprisonment.
