On 28 February 2022, Moscow, in response to the Ukraine-related sanctions that have been implied on them, Russian closed its airspace for thirty-six countries which include- 27 member countries of the European Union. This has come as a retaliation to the sanctions on the Russian Aviation sector. The member countries of the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada have banned Russian aircraft in their countries.
A few of the banned nations have already been identified. In contrast, the others were named by Rosaviatsia- aviation authority, for the first time on Monday following the punitive measures imposed over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
This flight ban is expected to hurt airlines across the globe, especially those which fly to and fro big countries to get to Europe and Asia. This step has forced airlines across the world to find alternative routes to reach any desired place.
Moreover, this response is going to shoot up the airfare prices dramatically, as predicted by various nations. Rosaviatsia further added that the flights from the banned countries could use Russia’s airspace only under exceptional conditions.
If they get a special clearance and authorization from the Russian aviation authority or the foreign ministry, they can only use the airspace. Until then, it is completely off-limits for those nations.
The list of banned countries includes- Albania, Anguilla, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, British Virgin Islands, Germany, Gibraltar, Hungary, Greece, Denmark, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Jersey, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Slovenia Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to justify his invasion by naming it as a “special operation” run by the military and has stated that the country is currently ruled by “neo-Nazis”, which is a sheer treat to the land of Russia and its security. Kyiv and other western countries have a firm stern on this charge and believe it to be completely baseless and meaningless propaganda.
